We left Haifa yesterday morning and returned to Tel Aviv for the night. This evening, we will return to London for one night, then move on to our next destination tomorrow.
Yesterday was Shabbat, and as such most of the shops and businesses were closed. The beach, however, was crowded with masses of people of all ages, enjoying the sun and unbelieveably hot weather. It was far too hot and humid for me, however, so D and I retreated to our hotel room after lunch and hid from the elements.
Whenever we travel, regardless of the destination, I always have moments when I am moved by the thought that until that very second, I had no idea that the people around me existed. I hear the conversations that people have with one another in a language I do not understand, and I wonder about their lives; are they tourists? where are they from? what made them choose this place to visit? what does their real life look like at home? what do they aspire to? what is their greatest hope for their children? I will never know, though, because I am too introverted to ever strike up a conversation with a stranger. Instead, I watch and wonder.
So, if you are travelling one day and you notice a woman with long, black hair staring absentmindedly at you, it might just be me, wondering about your life story! And if you are speaking English or French, perhaps I’ll find enough courage to stop staring and actually speak with you. You never know.
This week has been a full and busy one for us in Israel. I have learned a lot, ate really well , enjoyed the warmth, friendliness, candour, generosity and hospitality of the Israelis that we met, and snapped many photos of this beautiful country.
Toda, Israel. Until next time.
