Sanikiluaq

Back from vacation, back to reality, and back to work, which means back to the north for me. I left Ottawa last week when it was 35 degrees and sunny, and flew to the Arctic where it is, er, not exactly 35 degrees.

Sanikiluaq is a small Inuit community located in James Bay (lower part of Hudson Bay). It’s part of a large group of islands collectively known as the Belcher Islands. Though it is just north of Quebec, Sanikiluaq belongs to the territory of Nunavut.

While the majority of Canada south of 60 degrees latitude is currently in the grips of a record-breaking heatwave, it has been rather cold, rainy, and foggy here in Sani.  All flights were cancelled yesterday due to poor visibility. I packed summer clothes as well as a few cool-weather items for this trip, but I don’t think that my summer clothes will be very useful during my three-week stint in this lovely, though cold, community.
