This past May long weekend marked the beginning of gardening season in the southern part of Canada, but here in the far north, where snow and ice are still plentiful, it meant a weekend of ice fishing during the annual (competitive) fishing derby. I’m not entirely sure what the rules were, but it seems that ultimately, the person who caught the longest fish would be declared the winner. There were also sub-categories, so there were plenty of chances for prize-winning.

Yesterday evening, the winners were announced at the hamlet arena. Prior to that, people gathered to enjoy a feast of fish and caribou, laughing and sharing, and generally enjoying some mild weather and good times.
