I love to eat, so it follows that I should love a good market. France, obviously, has an abundance of markets both indoor and outdoor, that sell everything from seafood, to local produce, to clothing and shoes. Most of the markets we have visited over the last few days seem to be selling melons that look like small, smooth-skinned cantaloupes, as well as peaches, strawberries, carrots, aubergines, zucchini, miles of tomatoes, figs, and lettuces. It has become clear to D and me that melons, apricots, strawberries, and peaches must be in season, because not only are we seeing these in great quantities in the markets, we have also seen numerous road side stands from local farmers selling these insanely delicious fruits. On the way home from visiting the Pont du Gard this afternoon, we pulled over to buy some melons and peaches from a man and woman sitting on the shoulder of the road under the shade of some large plane trees. We ate the fruit as soon as we got home; the melon was sweet, juicy, and floral, tasting nothing at all like any melons we have ever had. The peaches were equally delicious, and we had to eat these hovering over the sink as the sweet juices ran down our chins and hands. We have been so lucky that because we are staying in an apartment with a fully-equipped kitchen, we have been able to actually purchase food from the markets, which we can prepare and eat at home. It makes all the difference when you can step up to the vendors and order some of their offerings instead of just staring admiringly and sneaking a photo when no one is looking!
