The sole reason we added Lyon to our itinerary was to see the Stone Roses (amazing band from Manchester, England) in concert last night! Lyon has a summer festival each year called, “Les Nuits de Fourviere”, with performances taking place at the Roman amphitheatre.
Cameras were prohibited, so unfortunately I had to leave my camera at home. D went for a jog earlier in the afternoon, however, and he jogged up to the venue and caught the band going through their soundcheck. They played for about an hour, attracting a tiny crowd of die-hard fans.
The band has no dates for North America for this tour, so we felt very lucky that we were able to secure tickets for this show in Lyon. The first date they announced was for Manchester, two shows for a total of 150,000 seats. These sold out in 14 minutes, a record for a UK rock concert.
The show was incredible, and D and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. For those of you who know me as a somewhat uptight priss, you would have laughed at me last night. I’m talking about singing, dancing, yelling, shouting, both-arms-in-the-air-I-don’t-care-how-ridiculous-I-look attitude for 2 hours straight. We crossed the Atlantic for this phenomenal band, so the last thing I cared about was how silly I may have looked.
This is my favourite Stone Roses song. Probably one of my top 10 favourite songs of all time.

A truly spectacular evening. Loved every second of it. Band on top form. Reni is so skilled it’s unreal. Been humming Roses tracks all day since. And it’s not every day you get to see Eric Cantona “singing” with Mick Jones to boot (though our North American friends probably aren’t too clued up about what a momentous occasion that was to have King Eric join us!)

Hi,
Agreed, it was a spectacular evening. Our only regret is that we were not able to secure tickets for at least one of those three concerts in Manchester! Thanks for the bit about Eric Cantona…had to “Google” him of course, and now we understand what the excitement was all about.
